Happy Birthday! and pass the succotash
It has been a rough year for restaurants. They seem to be closing as fast as they open (Cot d'Or, Varietial) But not all are struggling. Devin Tavern turns one this week. The little brother to Dylan Prime has found itself a nice home in Tribeca. In celebration, the upscale tavern rich in leather and wood hosted an intimate birthday party last night where tidbits from the upcoming fall menu were revealed.ÃÃÂ
Executive Chef Derrick Styczek, who says he "cooks for fall", is known for hearty and creative dishes like wild boar chops "tattoed" with sage and served with spinach spaetzle. Come fall, he is ttaking advantage of all the harvest has to offer. Long Island duck breast will be served atop crispy duck leg pierogies. Tempura battered and fried squash blossoms come stuffed with sweet and sour lobster. Styczek does justice to vegetables, too, offering puree of cauliflower (a nice sub to standard mashed potatoes), sweet corn and wild mushroom succotash and nicely pan seared sweet potatoes. These are the kind of sides that will ensure you hang on to the summer figure you worked all last winter on for just a bit longer. Saying goodbye to summer will be hard to do, but new fall menus certainly soften the blow. That said, bring on the squash!
